They're called "Bolts from the blue" - and it's exactly like it sounds.

The National Weather Service says it's when a lightning bolt travels, usually from the backside of a thundercloud, in clear air away from the cloud itself.

KETK meteorologists say there have been cases where people have been struck by lightning with nothing but blue skies overhead.

The lightning has been known to travel up to 25 miles away from the storm cloud.
