Both Sides of Wet/Dry Debate React to Outcome

May 10, 2009 - 8:56pm

SMITH COUNTY - The debate waged on for months in Justice of the Peace Precinct Four of Smith County about the sale of alcohol.

Hands down many people agree this was by far the most heated of topics.

But now its over, and we wanted to know what both sides of the issue thought of the outcome.

The citizens of Justice of the Peace Precinct Four voted and decided not to allow the sale of beer or wine for off-premise consumption.

But it was close, just over 100 votes difference.

When it came to whether of not to allow the sale of mixed beverages in restaurants with certification, that did pass, but only by 42 votes.

So what do both sides think about the outcome?

The "Keep Precinct Four Dry" committee says they're happy with the outcome, but Ken Good says the race was closer than they expected, "I think that the results show that our opponents made a big push in the last week and a half and I think that it was fruitful I think some of it was very damaging."

John Robbins with the "Smith County Citizens for Economic Growth" committee says it's a huge lose for the county, "Smith County is going to miss our on a lot of tax revenue they could have been getting...70 years."

Well, that's what happens when you let the religious fanatics take over. All reason and intelligence tend to go right out the window along with things like freedom of speech, honest business dealings, and many other things that aren't stripped away from people in areas of the country that actually count. Welcome to the 17th century, again.

I wonder all the time what people think of the wettest dry county in Texas. We won't let you drink at home without making a 30 mile round trip to the beer store, but you can drink at the club or restaurant and drive home. It seems that the county is more inclined to promote drinking and driving than allow me to have my rum and coke in the privacy of my own home without having to make an hour trip to get it.
