House fire takes lives of Smith County couple

March 4, 2009 - 3:54am

SMITH COUNTY - Firefighters spent most of this morning battling flames that killed two people at a house along County Road 1297 in Smith County.

Officials responded to the call around 1:30 Wednesday morning.

Fire Marshal Marilynn Wilson tells us three people were in the home when the fire started. A man and his wife were unable to get out of the home. Their son escaped. Officials say mother and son tried to get the man and put the fire out before calling 911.

Reports say both the man and wife were disabled.

Around 2 a.m. live ammunition inside the structure started going-off making fighting the fire even more risky.

The blaze also sparked a grass fire in the trees behind the house, but firefighters were able to contain flames before they spread to other homes in the area.
