Buckner shoe drive kicks off in East Texas

Monday, July 28, 2014 - 4:46pm

The Buckner shoe drive has begun and East Texas businesses are getting involved. Several local businesses have opted to be host locations for shoe drop-offs. The shoes donated will be sent to Dallas where the fundraiser originally began. From there the shoes will be distributed to needy children throughout the country and overseas. Around 30 percent of the shoes collected will go to children in the United States, including children in East Texas.

Kelly's A/C in Whitehouse decided to become a host location after hearing the campaign for the shoes on a local Christian radio station. Since then, Shawna Drigger from Kelly's A/C says several people have come in to donate shoes and even cash or checks. She's says the community should get involved and help what ever they can because nothing compares to making a child smile.

The Sylvan Learning Center in Tyler is also a host location. Director Bill Martin says he's in the business of helping kids and is always excited to do his part. He says its not just the health risk children without shoes have to be concerned about. "There's a lack of confidence that disappears when a child is handed a new pair of shoes", says Martin.

The Tyler Sylvan Learning Center is offering an extra incentive to families who donate by giving discounted tutoring prices per pair of shoes brought in to their drop-off location.

A list of drop-off locations in East Texas can be found here. The shoe drive ends August TH.
