Bullard student anglers qualify for prestigious tournament
(KETK) - Tyler, Tx — Two Bullard High School fishermen placed third in their region, landing them a spot in the first-ever Skeeter Boats -- Texas Top 6 Invitational Tournament.
Bullard senior Landen Beckham and sophomore Kevin Haugh beat out 122 teams to place third in their region. And now their favorite past-time is paying off big as they prepare for one of the largest high school tournaments in the state.
"I've always loved competition," Beckham said. " I play basketball here at Bullard. And I've loved to fish since I was little, so you combine both competition and fishing.... I can't handle it, it's so addicting.
Hooked on the possibility that each release of their line, could reel in a win for their hometown and their high school.
"It's amazing to see that our students can compete at that level," said Bullard Principal Scott Franks.
Winning this tournament will not be easy, since they will compete against the top six teams from three Texas regions, but the boys say they are ready.
"We've got a bunch of work research wise and pre-fishing but your fishing against the best kids in Texas so you're really going to have to bring it," Beckham said.
The duo placed in the top 10, in four of their five qualifying tournaments.
"We tried really hard, did our research and it paid off," Beckham said.
The tournament will take place this June 14 at Lake Fork.
