KILGORE — On Tuesday night at Forest Home Baptist Church in Kilgore, the group "Forever in God We Trust" invited several candidates running for various offices in the area to speak their minds.

Among the crowd, 4 of the candidates running for Rusk County Sheriff.

KETK first spoke with Ron Duncan.  He's been in law enforcement for 22 years -- 3 years as the chief deputy under Sheriff Pirtle's administration.

We asked Duncan and all of the other candidates the main thing they would change as Sheriff.

"The plan is to continue with what we've been doing...building on the success that we've had.  We've totally updated our patrol division, they have the best and latest equipment to work with.  We have the lowest reportable crime since 1999," Duncan said.

Darryl Norris has spent 21 years at the Rusk County Sheriff's office.  He was once chief deputy as well.

He says he's always been big on training.

"I support training big time.  The more education we can get our officers, then the more confident they'll be in their jobs...and the better deputies they'll be.  I've always been a big supporter of that and I always try to do that," Norris said.

Jeff Price has 27 years of law enforcement experience.  He's currently a patrol lieutenant for the Henderson Police Department.

"The Sheriff's office is currently headed in the right direction.  It just needs some more...direction.  Some personnel issues that need to be addressed, training issues, trying to limit the budget down," Price said.

Candidate Bill Turner has more than 16 years of criminal justice experience.

He currently works as a criminal investigator for Harrison County.

"All law enforcement is gonna be reactive to some point...but I also believe that you need to be proactive.  The second is to make the Sheriff's office more open to the public.  For the public to address concerns that they have with the Sheriff's office," Turner said. 

We were told candidate Charlie Williamson couldn't make it.  And Democratic candidate Oscar Still was not in attendance either.
