Candidates tout values, conservative credentials during Longview stop
Longview — An East Texan hoping voters will place him in charge of the Texas Senate recalled land owners along the Mexican border reaching out to him as commissioner of agriculture.
“They were being chased off their property by violent drug cartels. And the solution out of Washington, (D.C.), is to give away citizenship like cotton candy at a county fair,” Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples told tea party members Monday in Longview.
Staples is one of four Republicans seeking the party nomination as lieutenant governor.
Staples said part of his solution was Texas Department of Agriculture grants for the Department of Public Safety to buy high-tech, low-cost border cameras.
