San Antonio, TX —  A 2-year-old boy is dead after two cars, including a police patrol car, ran over him after he wandered from an apartment on San Antonio's West Side.

The Bexar  County medical examiner's office said German Alonzo died at University Hospital about an hour after the 9 p.m. Saturday incident on Culebra Road, about 1½ miles west of St. Mary's University.

Police Chief William McManus said the officer he heard something hit his car while he was driving back to his substation. A car behind the officer also hit the child. McManus said both drivers stopped to help the child.

McManus said the officer, whose identity hasn't been released, will be placed on paid administrative leave pending investigation, as called for by policy.

No charges have been filed.
