CAUGHT ON TAPE: Tennessee dad delivers baby at gas station
TENNESSEE (CNN) — One Tennessee dad may have a lock for 'Father of the Year' honors.
Of course, his significant other played a role too.
When she went into labor, the two headed toward the hospital but time ran out too soon.
"I woke up that morning with discomfort, but not what I thought was labor," said mother, Shannon Hodge.
Just to be safe, Shannon Hodge and Neil Huffines hopped in the car and headed to Vanderbilt Medical Center. But as rush hour traffic continued to build, the discomfort took a turn.
"Very quickly things changed once we got on our commute and it went from, 'I'm not sure if I'm labor,' to 'We don't know if we're going to make to the hospital," said Hodge.
So they called 911, and an ambulance was on its way but both mom and dad to be knew the baby would arrive first. So the couple pulled off the interstate into a Shelby Avenue Tiger Mart parking lot under a surveillance camera. Eight minutes later they had a brand new baby daughter.
"Hero daddy just delivered her and cleared her airway and then she started to cry and I tied her cord off with his shoe lace and swaddled her in my pants and put her on my chest," said Hodge.
"It's just one of those things where you have to put your game face on and do what you have to do," said Huffines.
And now baby Lillian, just three weeks old, has the story of a lifetime and the video to prove it.
"The funny thing is since the whole time she was pregnant, I wanted to be the one to get down there and deliver the baby," said Huffines.
