On January 11, 2010 at around 12:50 p.m., Longview Officers were dispatched to Good Shepherd Medical Center after medical personnel called and reported that a child had been attacked by dogs and brought in to the hospital for treatment.
Longview Police and Animal Control Officers responded to the hospital and found that a 3-year-old girl had been attacked by four pit bull dogs while in the backyard of a residence at 1210 Fairway Drive. The child had sustained dog bites all over her body and had serious injuries to her face and head.
The child's mother told investigating officers that she had been at the residence visiting a friend who had been staying there. She allowed her daughter to go into the backyard with the dogs without her supervision, because her daughter had been around the dogs before.
The mother described the dogs as "puppies" and investigators found the dogs to be approximately 3 months old, weighing 15-20 pounds each. Animal control officers seized the dogs and charges of endangering a child have been filed against the mother for not providing proper supervision.
The Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services were notified and are conducting an independent investigation.
