Tyler, Texas — Some people get a freshly cut Christmas tree to display in your home for the holidays, but what do you do with the tree after Christmas?

There are some creative ways to recycle your tree, like Christmas tree fishing! Randy Hansen from Agrilife Extension tells KETK that fishermen commonly will use Christmas trees and submerge them in a lake, the small fish will find a home in the branches underwater and will attract big fish to that area. Hansen says, "Fishermen like to use old Christmas Trees...sink them in a pond or a lake to provide this kind of habitat, it increases their fishing enjoyment."

Another alternative to disposing of your Christmas tree is to take it to a recycling center and grind it down into mulch. Trend setters Recycling Center just south of Tyler on Old Jacksonville Highway only charges five dollars to make your mulch or compost, Joe Glover from Trend setters tells KETK, "We offer an alternative place to come they can bring their clean green waste, Christmas trees alike, and what we'll do with them is take them and grind them up and put them through a manufacturing process where we will produce bio-mass fuel or mulch and compost that we sell back to the general public."

Or you can just put your tree in your back yard and create a wildlife habitat and feed the birds. Gary Lynch from the Tyler Solid Waste Department tells KETK, "They can put them out in their back yard, stake them up in a way so that birds can use them, winter over in, to have a habitat for them they can hang feeders inside so that birds can have a safe place to go and eat."

Or you can just take your tree to your local tree recycling center, Lynch tells KETK there are two locations in Tyler, "Residents can take their natural un-flocked trees to two locations here in Tyler, at McDonald Rd. and Golden Road...Golden Road Park there will be a sign in the parking area where you can drop them off, or at Fun Forest Park."

Most East Texas tree recycling centers open on December 26 and end Mid-January.
