HOUSTON - One suspect was found dead Saturday after a six-hour standoff with SWAT officers at a church in northeast Houston, Texas.

Police were called to the Market Street Baptist Church around 9:30 am after someone reported a family disturbance involving a weapon.

Several roads were blocked off after officers say the suspect fired several shots at them before barricading himself inside the church.

About 30 SWAT officers were called to the scene.

Police said the standoff ended when the suspect dead, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Police are not sure when the suspect died.

"He may well have shot himself before everybody got out here," said Capt. Robert Montgomery with HPD SWAT. "That's always possible, cause we never spoke with him."

An empty liquor bottle was found near the suspects body.

Police say the suspect, who worked as a custodian at the church, was involved in a domestic disturbance with his wife, who also worked at the church.

A friend of the suspect says he and his wife of 17 years had been separated for about four months.

"Breaks my heart I can't believe it," said Joe McGinty a friend of the suspect. "He just lost it."
