“Remembrance and Renewal: Celebrating our past, anticipating our future” is the theme for Flint United Methodist Church’s 140th Anniversary.

“Today you need to remember to carry-on the message that keeps the church going and going,” said Fred Worten, former pastor of the church (1998-2008).

Sunday’s service was filled with emotion after celebrating so many years of worship.
“Being here teaches us to be appreciative of the four fathers, founders that had a vision and they put forth the necessary efforts to build a church,” said Worten.

The church on County Road 169 isn’t the original church. “It was a tornado that came through and blew the church down and so they had to build a new church and that was in 1932,” said Lila Glenn, church member. It was the year Lila Glenn was born. She adds, “I have many memories here, particularly as a child because I lived right behind the church an I played in the church yard a lot.

From Sunday services, celebrating weddings, anniversaries and Christenings, church members say since then this church has been a gift from God. After service folks had lunch and sweet tea under the warm sun, a perfect Sunday they call it.

“It’s really important to me to have the past come together with the present, if we keep our faith traditions alive by celebrating long anniversaries like this with a big community gathering it allows us to take our faith into the future,” said Dr. Robby Plato, Worship Ministry Chair.
