Henderson City Council members agreed unanimously Tuesday to a proclamation in support of the school bond election.

The community will vote May 11 on a $27 million bond package to fund construction of a new middle school for the Henderson Independent School District.

The current middle school was built in 1953 and houses sixth, seventh and eighth grades. A similar proposal was narrowly defeated by voters in May 2010 and November 2011.

The proposal would raise taxes 9 cents per $100 valuation, said school board spokeswoman Stacey Sullivan. The current tax rate is $1.18 per $100 valuation.

Councilman Steve Higginbotham said improving the school would benefit the entire community.
