Longview, TX — When Patrick Williams was assailed by mosquitoes recently, he called the city of Longview and asked for a mosquito trap.
City crews brought the trap one evening to his Central Longview home, and when the city employee returned the following morning, the volume of mosquitoes left little question that the area would need to be fogged, he said.
“The lady told me she wouldn’t even have to count (the mosquitoes in the trap),” Williams said. “It was making a noise like a hornets’ nest.”
More than 100 Culex mosquitoes — the kind that carry the West Nile virus — were inside the backyard trap.
Williams said that he had been concerned about the mosquitoes and wanted his neighbors to know this kind of mosquito was prevalent in their community.
The volume of mosquitoes resulted in the city target spraying in his Lomond Avenue neighborhood — one of a half-dozen areas where Culex mosquitoes have been found in high enough numbers to warrant fogging.
The threshold for spraying is 50 Culex mosquitoes in a particular trap.
