Tyler, TX — The City of Tyler Planning and Zoning Department will host a meeting to receive input from stakeholders on the Medical District Area Development Plan. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1 in the Board Room of the White Administration Services Building on the Tyler Junior College Campus, 1400 E. Fifth St.

The Medical District and Tyler Junior College Area Development Plan is an outgrowth of the Tyler 21 Comprehensive Plan and the Industry Growth Initiative (IGI). This plan will help guide the future development of the area. The planning area encompasses approximately 1,062 acres surrounding the medical district and the Tyler Junior College campus contained in the boundaries of Front Street and Broadway Avenue to Fifth Street and Old Omen Road.

Supporting more than 25,000 jobs in the Tyler region, the healthcare sector is Tyler’s largest industry in terms of employment and economic impact. Launching an area development plan for the medical district is one of the steps the City of Tyler is taking to help foster growth in this industry.

“An important component of the current study is engaging local organizations, businesses, citizens and major stakeholders to identify current issues and opportunities in the area,” said Barbara Holly, director of Planning and Zoning. “The input we receive at this meeting will help us identify critical issues and implementation ideas for the Plan.”

The goal of the Plan is to consider the impact on future land use, infrastructure and pedestrian connections within the areas. The scope of the area development plan will include the following elements:
Public/stakeholder involvement;
Land use/zoning;
Transportation/pedestrian connections; and,
Environmental/aesthetic design issues.

Work on the Plan is well underway and a final draft scheduled to be presented to the City Council in December 2011.
