City puts battle plan into action to combat downtown Kilgore sales slump

Later hours, sidewalk sales and nighttime rhythms are elements on tap for downtown Kilgore at a time of slumping sales tax revenues.

“I think we’re going to see that (be) different, especially with an entertainment district,” Main Street Program Manager Clara Chaffin said recently in Downtown D’Lites.

The afternoon was hot, as first one then two women arrived to build their own ice cream treats in the North Kilgore Street eatery.

“Overall, the businesses are doing OK,” Chaffin said. “But they could use more support from the community.”

Though the area still is a regional magnet for shoppers and diners, declining sales and dwindling traffic has taken some shine off a downtown turnaround that has drawn positive attention since it started several years ago.
