Cold snap haults crawfish supply to East Texas restaurants

Tyler, Texas (KETK) — Crawfish season is in full swing but crawfish farmers in Louisiana are struggling to get the popular shellfish to their customers in East Texas.
The freezing temperatures throughout the region has left crawfish ponds in the deep south frozen over, and now the crawfish supply to East Texas businesses is very limited, "We don't have any crawfish in house, as far as the fresh live Louisiana crawfish you can't pick it up at all right now," owner of Tyler's Fat Catz Lousiana Kitchen, Cedric Fletcher said.
Some fisherman in Louisiana say they are 80-90 percent off this year, compared to the last three years and the cold weather has got everything on hold. Limited supply and high demand means an increase in prices, "The prices are like a dollar and a half a pound more that I've ever paid before, It's like everyone is fighting over them to get what few there are right now." Rodney Murphy owner of Circle M. Crawfish in Big Sandy said, "that does hurt because that's the biggest part of our business is live and boiled crawfish."
Now, all businesses can do are wait and hope that mother nature brings some sunshine to the deep south so the mud bugs can crawl up on land, and onto our plates again. Murphy said, "Just bare with us another week or two and they will be coming in."
