Coming soon: Text-to-911 service
The Longview News-Journal — By mid-2015, city of Longview residents could have the option to text 911.
Longview Police Department is one of several area law enforcement agencies gearing up for the upcoming text-to-911 service, an early step in a national initiative to modernize the emergency call system.
Text-to-911 technology, which allows a user to send a text to 911, has not been widely publicized because it works on only two networks and is not in use statewide.
In Texas, the service is available at 27 call centers for Verizon or T-Mobile users in 12 counties, many of which are in North Texas.
Longview Public Safety Communications Training Coordinator April Sanders said the city hopes to have text-to-911 services available by the middle of 2015.
“I do know that our phone system is NextGen (text-to-911) ready,” she said. “Which means it is good to go and will not have to be replaced when all of the text-to-911 technology is readily available.”
