Commissioner speaks about allegations surrounding son
Derek's dreams are now in the hands of Texas Rangers.
July 16, 2009 - 10:21pm
SMITH COUNTY - Smith County Precinct 3 Commissioner Terry Phillips has remained silent since his son, a Smith County Constable was accused of flashing a gun and badge at a party last month.
But the elder Phillips and his wife, Karen, want to speak on behalf of their son, whom they say is distraught over allegations from the party.
"God is getting me through this," said Commissioner Phillips.
A month ago Derek was on top of the world. He had just graduated from Kilgore College Police Academy.
"He's wanted to be a police officer since he was a child," said Phillips, gushing along with his wife about his son's dreams from a young age.
But Derek's dreams are now in the hands of Texas Rangers.
The story starts on the night of June 29th as the elder Phillips were on vacation in Alaska. Derek stayed home and had a party. What happened at the party remains a mystery.
A Tyler Morning Telegraph source said Derek learned money was stolen. He allegedly ran to the bedroom, got his badge and gun and forced everyone to stay inside the home.
The Smith County Sheriff's Department was called out about a disturbance. Derek Phillips didn't go to jail - but sources say he identified himself as a deputy constable.
Since he works in law enforcement and his father is an elected official - the Texas Rangers quickly took over.
"He's not happy about the accusations," said Terry Phillips. "He wants to speak out and tell his side...but he has to wait until the Texas Rangers are finished with their investigation. It's hard for him right now."
More allegations surfaced Thursday over Phillips history of misdemeanors.
He's had six speeding tickets - and a few other minor offenses - like no car insurance - and a minor in possession of alcohol.
"It's been three years since he had a ticket," said Terry Phillips. "As for not having insurance like the paper said, that's not true because I pay for the insurance. He just didn't have the card."
Karen said she just wants everyone to hold judgement. She said her two boys are her life and she stands by her son 100 percent.
"Derek is so full of love," she said. "That's what I want people to know about him. I'm so proud of who he is and I believe the truth will be revealed."

Lets not be quick to Judge. Let the Rangers do their Jobs and the truth will come out. Our prayers are with the family!

9 months agoJust another superjock, macho jerk with a badge and a gun. We don't need his kind.
With everything I have read nationwide I
know longer respect the FBI, CIA, sheriff
deputies, policemen, highway patrol etc.
They think with a badge and a gun they can
do anything.
