Commissioners table lease proposals for school land
GILMER — Upshur County’s Commissioners Court on Wednesday opened and tabled proposals on the surface lease for the county’s West Texas school land after rejecting, 3-2, a motion by one commissioner to delay opening them.
Pct. 1 Commissioner James Crittenden wanted to postpone opening the proposals until the court reworked what he termed areas of concern in it, and until District Attorney Billy Byrd answered questions involving it. Crittenden suggested returning the proposals unopened to those who submitted them, and scheduling workshops on the issue.
Pct. 2 Commissioner Cole Hefner, who seconded the motion to delay the opening, said new information had surfaced about whether a new lessee would have access to the land.
“We don’t even know if these proposals require access,” said County Judge Dean Fowler, who cast the tie-breaking vote rejecting Crittenden’s motion. Pct. 4 Commissioner Mike Spencer and Pct. 3 Commissioner Lloyd Crabtree also opposed the delay.
