Kilgore, Tx (KETK) — The community of Kilgore is in mourning, after police say a man shot and killed his sister-in-law and was then killed by authorities.
The scene on Highway 31 in Kilgore Tuesday changed from a quiet, country road, to a slew of police cars, helicopters, news crews and chaos.
Parts of Highway 31 were shut down for hours after a multi-agency search was launched to find an alleged gunman on the run. According to Kilgore police, 37-year-old Randy Vinson shot his sister-in-law, Elizabeth, Tuesday morning.
Vinson was spotted by authorities sitting on a bridge over Rabbit Creek, armed with a rifle, he then fled into the woods. Authorities chased him on foot, before they say, Vinson opened fire. We're told Gregg County deputies and Kilgore police officers shot back, shooting and killing him.
Neighbors say a cloud of sorrow has encompassed the entire community.
John Freehling says, "there's no hurt like losing someone you love. I know what they're going through."
Jennifer Terrones is a new mom and says she feels for Elizabeth's children.
" It's sad...yeah it's sad for the kids..they don't have their mom anymore."
Police say Elizabeth's children were home at the time of the shooting, but were unharmed. Elizabeth's family members declined to go on camera but they tell KETK she was a great person, and a great mother to her three children.
