Council designates Lufkin 'healthy city' to get $81,000 grant for promoting fitness

Lufkin, TX — The Lufkin City Council on Tuesday designated Lufkin a healthy city and accepted a $81,000 grant through the Community Transformation Implementation Plan Transforming Texas Program.
The Angelina Cities and County Health District provided a pass-through grant to the city to assist with its efforts in encouraging individuals of all ages to improve their physical fitness. According to city officials, the grant is for seven months with a provision for a renewable four-time one-year grant, focused on developing physical activity awareness in Lufkin to reduce the incidence of obesity, cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and related preventable diseases.
