County rankings shed light on East Texas health

Wednesday, March 30, 2011 - 5:42pm

The "County Health Rankings" website says where we live matters to our health.

The report is based on criteria ranging from individual health behavior, health care, environment, jobs, and even education.

Smith County leads the East Texas pack when it comes to being healthy.

In a recent study based on 2009 data, out of the 223 Texas Counties ranked, Smith ranked 66th in "health factors" and 51st in "health outcomes."

George Roberts with the Northeast Texas Public Health District says one of the main reasons is because the county has greater access to primary physicians and health care services than others in the region.

He says he hopes the county will do even better next year.

"In 2008...the City of Tyler implemented a very strong smoking ordinance.  We should start seeing some results of that in this data in the years to come.  Our Tyler Fifth city Initiative started last year in 2010 and it will be a couple of years before we see the results of that in our data as well as our obesity rate - is still showing it to be 28%" Roberts said.
