Bowie County, Texas (KETK) — An East Texas man is dead and another is in critical condition after an argument over batteries in Bowie County.
On Wednesday, Jackie Lynn Autrey, of Maud, called Richard Dwade Rhea, also of Maud, to sell him batteries. Richard expressed his displeasure over a winch Jackie sold him the previous Monday, but agreed to buy the batteries.
Later in the evening, Jackie took the batteries to Richard's house and unloaded them next to his shop. An argument ensued between the two over the winch and according to Jackie, Richard produced a firearm and pointed it at him. As Jackie was leaving the property, he heard the firearm discharge. Jackie drove home, but later decided to return to Richard's house to speak with him.
While they were talking, Jackie's brother, Johnny Wayne Autrey, 39, of Atlanta, called him. Richard overheard Johnny threatening him while he was talking to his brother on the phone. Richard told Jackie he was too old to fight and pulled out a firearm. Jackie again got in his vehicle to leave Richard’s property. While Jackie was driving off, Richard was shooting at his vehicle. Jackie passed Johnny who was traveling in the opposite direction on his way home.
Jackie turned around and went back to Richard’s house where he saw Johnny’s vehicle parked. As Jackie got closer to Johnny’s car, he saw Johnny lying on the ground and Richard had a firearm in his hand. Richard pointed his firearm at Jackie who ducked down in the seat of his vehicle. It was at this time Richard was hit by the vehicle that Jackie was driving. Jackie got out of his vehicle to find Johnny was critically injured.
Medical personnel were called to the scene, but they were unable to help Johnny who passed away.
Richard was taken to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Texas Rangers are working with Bowie County Investigators on this ongoing investigation.
