Longview, Texas (KETK) — The Longview Police Department is investigating vandalism at a local cemetery.
On Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.., Longview Police were dispatched to a criminal mischief call at Greenwood Cemetery located at 705 Magrill. When officers arrived, they discovered approximately 88 headstones had been vandalized. Some of the headstones had been moved, knocked over and broken. Gates were broken and opened to access headstones that were enclosed. Even headstones marked as official historical markers-- like those of Longview founding father O.H. Methvin and members of the Meredith Family, who served in Gregg County law enforcement in the early '20's-- were knocked over and damaged.
Longview Police Officer Debra Stiles says the damage is extensive.
"88 different headstones, that's a lot of different headstones..that's a lot of different families who now have their memorials damaged of their loved ones that they've lost. So,that really affects a lot of different people. Cost wise, the price could be up to $1,000 per headstone..or even more than that."
The motive for this crime is unknown at this time and a suspect has not been identified.
If anyone has information on this case they are asked to contact Longview Police Department at 903-237-1199. If the tipster wishes to remain anonymous they can contact Gregg County Crimestoppers at 903-236-7867.
