An East Texas man was arrested early Sunday morning after he injured a police officer.

Darel Eugene Bean, 43, of Longview, was taken into custody at 3:32 a.m. when it was discovered he had stolen items from a convenience store in the 100 block of South Access Road. Authorities were first called to the scene when suspicious activity was reported, according to Longview Police Department Public Information Officer Kristi Bryan.

During a search of Bean's body, the suspect started to fight with law enforcement and broke an officer's thumb in the process. When police gained control of the alleged thief, drugs and items from the store were found on him.

Bean was booked into the Gregg County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance, assaulting a public servant and theft under $50. No bond has been set at this time.
