San Augustine, Texas (KETK) — The return of an autopsy Tuesday revealed the body of a man found in a San Augustine County fire was the result of murder.
On March 17, at 9:45 p.m., dispatchers at the San Augustine County Sheriff's Office received reports of a house fire on County Road 3200. When a deputy arrived minutes later, the entire mobile home was engulfed in flames.
Fire departments from San Augustine, Broaddus and Powell Town responded, but had difficulty attacking the fire because of exploding ammunition inside the home. Upon extinguishing the blaze, the body of Kavy Neil Sowell, 62, was found inside the house.
Sowell's body was sent to the following day to the Southeast Texas Forensic Center in Beaumont where an autopsy was performed. Preliminary results show the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds, resulting in his death.
The Texas Rangers were requested to assist in the investigation. Law enforcement authorities are continuing to develop leads and process evidence recovered at the scene.
