Bernie Tiede writ reaches state's highest criminal court

The legal writ seeking freedom for convicted Carthage killer Bernie Tiede was filed Wednesday with the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, the state judicial website showed.

Tiede, convicted in 1999 for the fatal shooting of Marjorie Nugent two years earlier, was freed on bond from a lifelong prison term in May on a joint motion by his new attorney and his original prosecutor.

Panola County District Attorney Danny Buck Davidson relented to the motion, asking Tiede be freed on time served, after defense attorney Jodi Cole presented evidence that Tiede could have killed Nugent in sudden rage fed by trauma from being sexually assaulted as a child.
