Authorities are investigating the death of multiple dogs found dead in southern Upshur County.

According to Precinct 3 Constable Stanley Jenkins, eight dead pitbulls were found by a man Friday morning in a creek on Poplar Road off FM 2685. Jenkins believes the dogs were dumped about a week ago.

The animals will now be turned over to a local veterinarian. The doctor will attempt to learn more details surrounding the dogs' deaths and possibly locate microchips to find an owner(s).

The man who discovered the bodies told KETK he believes-- based on visual injuries -- the pitbulls were used for dogfighting.

"It's evident that they'd been fighting them, they were fighting dogs..bulldogs every one of them. I've never seen that many..you see them here and there, dumped on the side of the road, but I've never seen eight at one time in one creek, so that shows there was something going on."

Editor's note: The dogs were not burned as originally reported.
