Tyler, Texas (KETK) —
An East Texas man jailed for the murder of ex-wife and kidnapping of the couple's son was found to have contraband in his cell.
According to the Smith County District Attorney's Office, James Calvert, 43, was found to have a paperclip in which he made into a handcuff key, a razor blade and pills hidden in his jail cell.
Calvert requested the court grant him a USB drive to save data he is gathering for his trial.
Officials say Calvert, who asked the state to release him from jail, was placed on suicide watch in the jail in the past couple of weeks.
In addition to the most recent crimes allegedly committed by Calvert, he was also previously in trouble with the law for aggravated assault in 2009 and violating a protective order three times between September 2009 and May 2010.
