A Smith County man is currently in critical condition after sustaining injuries in a Sunday night wreck.

The wreck happened on Farm to Market Road 344 just west of Farm to Market Road of 756. Deputy Corey Cameron attempted to stop a car after the driver, Joe David Hubbard, 42, failed to dim his headlights. When Cameron tried to stop Hubbard a chase began. While fleeing authorities, the car, driven by Hubbard with Crysla Chambers in the passenger seat, left the roadway and crashed just one mile west of Highway 110 on FM 344.

Hubbard was flown from the scene to a local hospital where he is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit. Chambers was treated at the hospital Sunday night and released.

Cameron plans to investigate whether or not Hubbard was driving while intoxicated. Hubbard has not been taken into custody at this time, as he is still in the hospital, but he is facing several charges including a possible outstanding state warrant for parole violation.

Hubbard is no stranger to Smith County authorities having been previously arrested for the following:

  • Four DWI
  • Fail to identify fugitive from justice
  • Public intoxication
  • Assault causing bodily injury

Hubbard is also believed to have left the scene of a head-on accident earlier last week on Highway 110, just south of Whitehouse, in Smith County.

Both accidents are under investigation.
