An East Texas constable was injured Tuesday after a suspect attempted to escape his arrest.

According to the Trinity County Sheriff's Office, at around 12:40 p.m., Precinct 2 Constable Mark Cole and Deputy Wells had just arrested a suspect, Jeffery Mackey, at a Coach Village home near Lake Livingston. He was wanted for assault family violence.

While Cole was taking Mackey to jail, the suspect jumped from the moving vehicle in an apparent escape attempt. The constable immediately stopped and caused Deputy Wells to crash into the back of Cole's vehicle. Mackey ran from the scene, but was eventually caught a short distance from the wreck.

Constable Cole was flown to a Conroe area hospital for treatment. He was alert and complaining of arm and shoulder pain. Deputy Wells received no major injuries.

Mackey remains in custody and is being held at the Trinity emergency room.

Since the crash involved two law enforcement agencies from the county, Sheriff Woody Wallace has asked Trinity Police Department Chief Steve Jones to investigate the crash.

The sheriff's office stated Cole was "in good spirits and being a real trooper!" They ask the public to keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
