ETX convicted felon jailed after leading police on 96 MPH chase in stolen car

Lufkin, Texas (KETK) —
An East Texas convicted felon is behind bars after leading Lufkin officers on an early morning high speed chase in a stolen car.
According to the Lufkin Police Department, officials were attempting to perform a routine traffic stop on Michael L. McKelvey, 29, who was driving 96 miles per hour around 12:00 a.m., Tuesday morning, on Keltys Street.
McKelvey fled from the officers but crashed his car into bushes in the 2800 block of Minnie Lou Street. The driver then fled on foot, but was detained in a horse pen approximately 200 yards away from the scene of the wreck. When authorities inspected the truck, they realized it was stolen. The owner of the vehicle was contacted and claimed he did not know McKelvey and he had left his truck unlocked with the keys inside.
McKelvey was arrested for evading arrest, with one prior conviction, unauthorized use of a vehicle and four Lufkin Municipal Court warrants.
The suspect is no stranger to the Angelina County Jail, having been arrested previously for the following offenses:
- Failing to attend school
Seven counts of vehicle burglary
Four counts of criminal mischief
Attempted vehicle burglary
10 counts of evading/resisting arrest
- Six drug charges
He was booked into the Angelina County Jail.
