An East Texas man is behind bars after allegedly assaulting a local police chief.

Ryan Jordan Cooley, 21, of Gladewater, was arrested Thursday morning for resisting arrest and assaulting Lakeport Police Chief Wesley Freeman at Zippy J's in the 5900 block of Estes Parkway. Chief Wesley was there responding to reports of a suspicious vehicle which was occupied by Cooley.

Cooley then reportedly got out of his car and began to throw punches at Freeman before a fight broke out. Reports state Freeman was then kicked in the back by Cooley when two bystanders helped authorities restrain Cooley.

This is not Cooley's first run-in with Gregg County law enforcement, having been previously arrested for the following:

  • 3 charges of delivery of marijuana in a drug free zone

  • Delivery of marijuana

According to Cooley's Facebook page, he is a 2011 graduate of Sabine High School.
