A wounded man suspected of burglarizing a house near Lufkin has escaped a Houston hospital where he was being treated.

Cody Barnhill, 33, of Clute, was taken into custody Thursday night, before fleeing from the hospital. Barnhill is on the run with bullets still in his back, wearing a hospital gown and is barefoot.

Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches says hospital employees told him Barnhill was still needing medical care.

Sanches tells KETK Barnhill was found at a La Quinta hotel in Clute. He had been shot while attempting to burglarize a house just north of Lufkin on Thursday afternoon. Barnhill was taking items from a house on Farm to Market Road 2251 when he was caught in the act.

The woman who owns the home walked into her living room to find Barnhill holding her jewelry box and her gun.

She had been feeding her cows and still had the feed can in her hands, so she swung it at Barnhill. It distracted him just enough to allow her to retrieve the gun from him. She immediately began pulling it out of its holster.

Barnhill started to run away, but the homeowner shot him in the back. Despite the injury, he still managed to escape and leave the scene in a white Toyota Corolla.

Authorities searched the area for his vehicle, but were unable to find him anywhere nearby.

Around 10:30 p.m., Thursday night, police received a 9-1-1 call from a La Quinta Inn in Clute.

Upon arrival, authorities found Barnhill with a gunshot wound and several items that are believed to have been stolen from multiple locations. Several electronics were among the stolen items.

Barnhill was flown to a Houston hospital, reportedly in stable condition. However, he was in intensive care for some time. His current condition is unknown.

A warrant has been issued by Angelina County for his arrest, and will be served as soon as possible. Once he is officially arrested, Barnhill will be transported to the Angelina County Jail.

KETK will update information as it becomes available.

Shot in the back?

Well fine with me. He broke into a house and the home owner could easy have fired just as he turned away to get a weapon.

This is Texas, don't break into people's houses!
