NOTE: An earlier version of the story indicated that the child was 18-months-old. Sunland Park PD has since revised the age of the child to 3-years-old.

Authorities with the City of Sunland Park have confirmed that 3-year-old Daniel Orozco Jr. was killed this morning after he child was struck by a car driven by his father, Daniel Orozco, in the Anapra neighborhood off of McNutt and Carrosel, just blocks away from the Texas-New Mexico border.

Sunland Park Police have now charged the boy's father in connection with the accident. During the course of the investigation, police learned that Orozco was attempting to buy heroin from someone in the Anapra area.

SPPD says that Orozco knew that the child could unbuckle his own seatbelt and get out of the car on his own. Orozco allegedly failed to buy the heroin and decided to leave the area, but didn't check to make sure that the 3-year-old was in the car before backing out.

After realizing he had ran over the toddler, Orozco and another man drove to the police department for help.

Police began first aid, and they were also assisted by Sunland Park Fire and AMR. The child was subsequently taken to UMC by MedEvac helicopter just after 8:30 a.m.

Authorities with the City of Sunland Park have since confirmed that the young child died as a result of his injuries at approximately 9:30 a.m.

A check of Orozco's criminal history in El Paso county reveals that he previously plead guilty to assault causing bodily injury to a family member and theft of property in November of 2013.

Orozco is being charged with child abuse resulting in great bodily harm, injury or death. His bond has been set at $500,000 cash.
