Father charged after allegedly shooting son by accident

A Smith County man was taken into custody early Tuesday morning for allegedly shooting his son in the foot by accident.

At around 7:10 p.m., on Monday, deputies were dispatched to the 15,000 block of County Road 2223 after a caller reported a family disturbance.

According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, the son refused to leave the father's property. In response, Steve Ray Swindle, 52, fired warning shots to scare his son from the property. During this time, a bullet ricocheted and hit his son's foot.

The victim drove himself to a local hospital in Tyler for medical help. His current condition is unknown.

At 12:45 a.m., on Tuesday, Swindle was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked in to the Smith County Jail. He bail was set at $20,000 bail.

An accident. Since when do the police arrest a person for accidental events? Oh yes, I forgot, we are in the infamous Smith County where rule of law has little meaning. Hopefully, the new Sheriff will oust out many of the criminals employed by law enforcement in Tyler, TX.
