The former East Texas deputy accused of shooting and killing a homeowner's dog has entered a not guilty plea on a charge of animal cruelty.

According to the Rains County District Clerk's Office, Jerrod Dooley entered the plea late Wednesday afternoon. He is expected to appear in court for a pre-trial hearing on July 17. During this time, its possible he could take a plea deal or not.

Dooley was indicted on one count of animal cruelty on Friday, May 9.

Dooley was fired in late April by the sheriff's office after being placed on administrative leave for several days following the shooting of a dog, "Candy," on Farm to Market 514. The owner said he drowned his dog to end his suffering.

A necropsy showed the dog was shot in the back of his head while retreating from the shooter.

The deputy responded to a call for help nearly two hours after a robbery was reported. The delay was investigated and the cause was found and corrected with administrative actions, according to the sheriff's office.

Dooley stated after the incident, he felt in danger of being attacked by the family dog and reacted by shooting to keep from being bitten.

I hope he gets the maximum punishment as he should , he should also be sued by the dogs owner for his pain and suffering and the fact that he had to drown his dog " his best friend " to put it out if its misery because he had no gun because some trash stole his out of his house. What a coward I thank God it wasn't a little kid running around the house with a bat going to play ball with his or her friends he may have shot them in the back of the head !!!! How would he plea on that ??????????????

Yea, a dogs tail is very dangerous, just never saw one with teeth before.
