An inmate who led police on a multi-county chase earlier this week and allegedly attacked a guard was found hanging in his cell Wednesday morning. Authorities were able to keep the man alive.

According to the Houston County Sheriff's Office, Joey Salinas, 36, of Conroe, was discovered hanging in his cell. Jail staff and deputies removed him from the suspended state and began CPR and utilizing an automated external defibrillator(AED). Paramedics with ETMC were dispatched and responded quickly. Salinas was taken to a nearby hospital and is currently on life support.

Salinas allegedly attacked a guard while he was being treated for injuries at a Lufkin Hospital on Tuesday. He was injured the day before when he wrecked out a vehicle in chase spanning four counties.

This attempted suicide is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers.

Who was asleep at the switch on this case?
This is a clear case of a man wanting to die & finding ways to make it happen.
Could it have been prevented?
Probably not.
However, the criminal justice system could have made it more difficult for him.
Give him a mental evaluation, put into a special cell, or placed on a suicide watch.
This is SOP in such cases.
Other contributing factors could have been drug withdrawal or psychosis.
This isn't rocket science - just paying attention to your job.
