A Cherokee County man has been arrested for breaking into a local store, but denied any involvement  in other burglaries that have have occured since moving to Jacksonville.

Derick Joe Dale Kemp, 40,  was arrested and taken to the Cherokee County Jail where he admitted to breaking into The Corner Store near Lake Jacksonville.

On Saturday at approximately 1:56 a.m., Cherokee County Deputies responded to an alarm at The Corner Store, located at the intersection of FM-747S and County Road 3119 near Lake Jacksonville.

Upon arrival Deputies saw the front door glass of the store had been shattered. Deputies made entry to the store and verified that the suspect was no longer on scene.

When the store owner arrived at 2:45 a.m.,  surveillance video footage was viewed. A suspect and vehicle description was obtained and broadcast to the surrounding law enforcement agencies. In addition to the description of the suspect, the investigator on scene discovered that the suspect ran into the door and had possibly suffered a cut to his head or face when leaving through the shattered glass door. DNA was collected at the scene.

At 3:30 a.m., Jacksonville police located and stopped a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's vehicle. Deputies arrived at their location and confirmed the vehicle and suspect as matching what was observed on the video. Deputies also observed a laceration to the top of the suspects head, which investigators believe will be consistent with the evidence collected at the scene.

Derick Joe Dale Kemp was arrested at that time, his vehicle towed, and he was transported to Cherokee County Jail where he was interviewed. During the interview, Kemp admitted to having broke into The Corner Store, but denied any involvement with other burglaries in the area since he moved to Jacksonville, from the Houston area, approximately 8 days earlier.

Kemp was arraigned for one count of Burglary of a Building by Justice of the Peace, Pct 1, Judge Brenda Dominy. Bond was set at $10,000 for the charge, which is a State Jail Felony.
