The Lufkin Police Department is looking into a report of a man who falsely claimed to be a police officer.

On July 4 at 10:45 p.m., LPD received a report of reckless driving on W. Frank Avenue in Lufkin. The complainant told police he had turned from Raguet Street onto Frank Avenue and was headed west when he was forced off the road by a white Ford mustang. A picture of the car and license plate number was provided to the responding officer.

The reportee said he followed and confronted the driver, who identified himself as an off-duty Sergeant with the Lufkin Police Department. The driver did not give his name. The license plate of his vehicle returned to a 2007 White Ford Mustang registered to an address in Paris, Texas.

A Lufkin lieutenant immediately accounted for all Lufkin Police Department sergeants and determined the offending driver was not an LPD employee.

This case has been forwarded to the LPD Criminal Investigation Division for further investigation as an impersonating a peace officer offense.
