Lufkin suspect hits officer, leads police on foot chase
Lufkin, Texas (KETK) — On Wednesday, police arrested a Lufkin man after he attacked an officer and ran from authorities
At 8:26 a.m., law enforcement was called to the 700 block of Allendale Drive on reports of criminal tresspass, according to the Lufkin Police Department. When police made it to the area, they learned a suspect had walked away when he discovered officers were en route. The caller gave authorities a description of the man and warned them of a gun in the man's backpack.
Officers eventually found the suspect near Marion Street and Johnson Avenue, a few blocks north of where the incident occurred. During an interrogation of the suspect, later identifed as Anthony Lerome Burks, the suspect hit the officer with his hand and backpack, then began running in the direction of Allendale.
Burks tried to enter a home on Allendale and was caught in the backyard. His backpack was found on the roof of the home. A pistol, with a removed serial number, was found inside the bag. Police were also able to recover a dropped pill bottle with his name on it in a nearby yard. It contained an unknown liquid that tested negative for various drugs.
Burks also had an outstanding municipal warrant. He was arrested and taken to the Angelina County Jail. The suspect was charged with additional counts of assault public servant, evading arrest, tampering and unlawfully carrying a weapon. His bail was set at $5,500.
