A 14-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was shot in the head, according to officials.

The New Orleans Police Department reports that the incident happened just after 2:00 a.m. on Friday, July 26.

We’re told the gunman, Merritt Landry, 33, shot the boy, who was allegedly standing in his front yard near his vehicle.

The teen was taken to the hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.

According to the NBC affiliate WDSU, Landry is currently an employee with the city of New Orleans as a building inspector.

Landry was arrested and charged with one count of Attempted Second-Degree Murder.

Landry’s mug shot was not available at the time this report was issued because he is still being processed. According to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, the booking process began shortly before 12:30.

Before anyone shouts Zimmerman, please read the more informative article on Nola.com. The teen had jumped a tall iron fence that surrounds the front yard and drive way. He was not just standing in the front yard. What's sad is the victim's own brother calls him a career criminal at age 14... Not that it gives Landry the right to shoot the kid in the head, but with a young child and pregnant wife and an armed robbery 2 hours earlier 2 blocks away, I can understand why he was on guard.

!4 yr. old was probably just on his way to the store to buy some candy.

wink, wink
