A Most Wanted Sex Offender with East Texas ties was captured this week in the Texas Panhandle by authorities after being on the lam for about two years.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Doug Otis Sims, 32, of Center, was caught by deputies in Armstrong County on Monday. The suspect attempted to evade police by using electrical tape to alter the numbers on his license plate.

Sims is awaiting extradition to Shelby County. He was convicted of sexual assaulting of a 14-year-old girl nine times over a period of several months and is required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. The convict was last registered with the Center Police Department in 2011 before he disappeared.

Authorities were after Sims for registration violation and burglary of habitation.

Sims was added to the Texas Most Wanted Sex Offender list on August 20 with a reward amount of $3,000. He was known to have family in Athens, Center and Burnet, Texas.
