Police: Man makes false report while hiding from police
Lufkin, Texas — At approximately 7:45am on June 30, 2014, the Lufkin Police Department received a report of someone firing a gun near Angelina College. The caller stated that they witnessed three males, one of which had a gun, shoot at a vehicle near the college. The caller went on to say that the subjects then fled on foot through the campus. Officers responded to the location and spoke with multiple subjects in
the area. No one else heard the shots or saw anything suspicious.
Officers continued to follow up on the report and were able to determine that the call was made by a suspect in another case. Officers were attempting to apprehend the subject who was in a nearby apartment when the call was made. Officers believe that the suspect made the report of the subject with the gun in an attempt to have the officers respond to the area of Angelina College so that he could elude capture.
Devonte Germain Turner 22 of Lufkin was arrested for Burglary of a Habitation and Fail to ID Fugitive at approximately 8:10am on June 30th. Officers of the Lufkin Police Department were investigating a burglary report and were waiting to get a search warrant signed for an apartment where they believed the suspect was hiding. The report of the shots fired came in while officers were waiting on the search warrant. Turner was later arrested and was in possession of a phone. The phone was later found to be the same phone that was used to make the report, according to 911 records.
Additional charges are forthcoming in regards to the false report.
