Argument over aliens escalates to sex-act with silver handgun, alleged death threat

Jennifer McCarthy, the ex-wife of Pulitzer Prize winning author Cormac McCarthy was arrested by Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Deputies Saturday afternoon following a bizarre domestic disturbance with her current boyfriend.

According to Santa Fe Sheriff’s statement of probable cause obtained Wednesday afternoon, McCarthy and her unnamed boyfriend became involved in an altercation in their Santa Fe home shortly before 11am Saturday morning at 24 Aventura Rd.

When responding officers arrived, McCarthy’s boyfriend advised Deputies that he and McCarthy had an argument about space aliens earlier in the morning and McCarthy left the home. She later returned, went directly into her bedroom and changed into lingerie. He advised deputies she had a silver handgun in her vagina and she proceeded to perform a sex-act on the silver Smith & Wesson. McCarthy then allegedly told her boyfriend “Who is crazy, you or me?” She then allegedly pulled the gun out of her vagina and pointed it at his head.

McCarthy’s boyfriend said he feared for his life, so he grabbed the gun from her and put it in the bathroom toilet. McCarthy then went into the bathroom to retrieve the handgun and put it in the trash can outside of the residence.

Deputies were able to locate a Smith and Wesson like the one described by McCarthy’s boyfriend in a trash can outside of the home.

McCarthy stated to Deputies on the scene that she had been in an argument with her boyfriend earlier in the morning, but said that she only touched his shoulder with her index finger to aggravate him. She also claimed that her boyfriend placed his right hand on her neck and quickly let go and walked away from her. She stated that she was not in fear of her boyfriend during any point of the alleged incident. McCarthy confirmed to Santa Fe Sheriff’s Deputies that she did have a gun, but she was unsure of where it was located and that it had been “missing for a while.”

Jennifer and Cormac McCarthy were married for nine years, ending in divorce in 2006. The couple have one son together. The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department probable cause statement does not indicate if he was home at the time of the dispute.

McCarthy was arrested and booked into the Santa Fe Adult Detention Center and charged with Aggravated Assault on a Household member.
