A Tyler man is in police custody after he allegedly tried to sexually assault a woman Sunday morning.

At 6:30 a.m., a 56-year-old woman was taking a walk in the area of Old Bullard and Fair Lane when she was approached by a man who tried to strike up conversation. After trying to change her direction, the man attacked her.

The suspect took the victim to the ground and dragger her into a semi-wooded area in that neighborhood and tried to sexually assault her. The woman fought back and began screaming. The suspect became spooked and ran away.

Officers were alerted to the incident and found a man in the area matching a description given by the victim. Officers confirmed this person as the suspect in the case.

Authorities arrested Alvin Dwain Jones, 56, of Tyler, a registered sex offender, for attempted sexual assault. He was booked into the Smith County Jail. His bond is set at $50,000.
