Sheriff: ETX burglars go on early morning crime spree

Nacogdoches (KETK) — Two Nacogdoches men were taken into custody after going on a crime spree in Nacogdoches County early Wednesday morning, said Sheriff Jason Bridges.
Nacogdoches County deputies stopped two tractors around 3:00 am on CR 816. Both suspects were acting suspicious, but told authorities they were leaving a hay field work site. Deputies checked both men, who at the time, came back clear. They were released at the scene.
About an hour later, deputies received a criminal trespass call in progress on CR 816. Deputies arrived at the scene and found two men stealing a backhoe. One of the suspects ran into a wooded area, while the other burglar tried to take off on a tractor, but was taken into custody without incident.
The man who ran into the woods, later identified as Daniel Stell, made his way to a home on CR 816 and took a truck. Stell then drove to the Cushing area on CR 971 where the pickup became stuck at an oil well site.
Shortly after 8 a.m., deputies received a call on a man trying to take a tractor from a residence in Cushing. Deputies responded to the scene a few minutes later and arrested Stell. Investigators determined the suspect was attempting to steal the tractor to pull out the stolen truck on CR 971.
A total of four tractors were recovered, one backhoe and one pickup. All equipment was returned to the owners.
Stell, 19, of Cushing, was charged with third degree felony theft , state jail felony theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle a state jail felony. His bail totals $20,000.
Stephen Bryce, 20, of Nacogdoches was charged with third degree felony theft . His bail was set at $7,500.
Both men remain in the Nacogdoches County Jail.
