A Smith County burglar learned the hard way that East Texans could be packing heat if you try to break into their home.

At 5:00 a.m., Smith County dispatchers received a 911 call about a man who had been shot near the 14000 block of Highway 271 North. When responding deputies arrived at the scene, the man was no longer in the area. Investigators later determined the man had been shot by a homeowner.

Detective also learned two black males and a white male had allegedly tried to burglarize the home around 4:00 a.m. The homeowners, a husband and wife, were awakened when their dogs began barking. The husband began investigating the raucous and spotted several people outside of his garage.

At this time, the husband woke his wife up and both retrieved guns and returned to near the garage where the burglars were located. A scuffle ensued once the man asked all of the thieves for identification and told them he was calling the police.

The homeowner and the white male began wrestling as the alleged burglar attempted to escape and the couple fired in his direction. The alleged burglar was hit in the buttocks area, most likely with a large caliber handgun.

The alleged burglar was taken to a Tyler hospital by private vehicle where he is being treated for the gunshot wound and is undergoing surgery. The injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Smith County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene and detectives are continuing the investigation at this time and are attempting to locate the two black males who escaped the scene.

Additional information will be release as it becomes available.

Asked for identification?

Folks, if you catch thieves in your home or garage, hold them at gun point, call the cops, and SHUT UP.

The cops can ask for ID. Instead you need to keep your mind on the crooks. Make 'em go prone and talk only the minimum needed to convey what will happen if they don't comply.
